I'm sure that being gay isn't entirely a matter of personal choice. Recent studies seem to indicate that sexual orientation begins in the womb. There does seem to be many disadvantages to being gay, particularly for someone who is gay and wants to have a family, although some gay guys that I know say they've acepted those limitations.

Can being gay live in harmony with being a christian?
by digderidoo ini have looked at the thread about gay marriages in california and thought about asking this question there, but instead of hi-jacking that one i thought i would ask it here.
there seems to be quite a few gay people on this site and i wonder how many class themselves as christian?
if so, can being gay live in harmony with being a christian?.

Purged songs of the Watchtower
by LogCon inmy memory of singing the kingdom songs go back to when i was a child in the 1950's.
they still hold a place in my memory and my heart.
how can something that is so much a part of your childhood not stay embedded in your heart.?.

Some of the songs were blatant rip-offs from classical works.
This Beethoven rip-off was amongst the worst. First the WT version:

Now the original Beethoven version, you need to slide in at 1 minute 28 seconds:

Not to derail the thread, but may I ask why those illegitimate figureheads are of any use to a democratic society?
A UK monarch's duties are mainly ceremonial. Also, the whole monarch thing brings an excess of cash into the UK's coffers in the form of tourism. However, the little used "Royal Prerogative" does act as a check on the government becoming too self-serving. For example, a government in power with a strong majority could theoretically pass a new law that required a general election to be held every 10 years instead of every 5 as is now the case. The necessity to have the Queen's written approval for every new law, which is admittedly almost just a formality, prevents governments in power making new laws that only serve themselves.

Anyone Can be baptised - Can't they?
by tim hooper indoes a new convert have to be approved for baptism by the elders or someone similar i wonder?.
years ago, at a circuit assembly, i came across a young man whose jw father had thrown him out of the family home because of his abusiveness.
he'd got nowhere to go so he travelled south and finished up attending our local assembly.

Years ago, at a circuit assembly, I came across a young man whose JW father had thrown him out of the family home because of his abusiveness. He'd got nowhere to go so he travelled south and finished up attending our local assembly. He'd been moved by what he heard at the baptism talk and spontaneously decided that he wanted to become a baptised witness. He joined the baptismal candidates, borrowed a costume and was duly baptised without anyone querying his motives. I have to say that he came across as being somewhat unstable.
Could such a thing happed today? Can anyone join the baptism candidates? Or is there some security in operation to ensure that only approved candidates can be dunked?

The title of the the thread is:
What do you say if you get asked "Are you an Apostate?"
Someone who asks such a question is unlikely to be trapped in a cult. The language is that of an accuser.

Nic - I do it just for the hell of it, it confuses them when you turn their own words back on them.

According to the WT - the famous mentally diseased issue - you are an apostate if you try to draw loyal witnesses away with false teachings. Obviously if you go on a site for ex's, then you're not trying to draw away loyal JW's. So going on a site such as this doesn't make you an apostate.
Here's the relevant WT clip:
How can we protect ourselves against false teachers? The Bible’s counsel regarding how to deal with them is clear.(Read Romans 16:17; 2 John 9-11.)“Avoid them,” says God’s Word. Other translations render that phrase “turn away from them,”“keep away from them,” and “stay away from them!” There is nothing ambiguous about that inspired counsel. Suppose that a doctor told you to avoid contact with someone who is infected with a contagious, deadly disease. You would know what the doctor means, and you would strictly heed his warning. Well, apostates are “mentally diseased,” and they seek to infect others with their disloyal teachings.(1 Tim. 6:3, 4) Jehovah, the Great Physician, tells us to avoid contact with them. We know what he means, but are we determined to heed his warning in all respects?<<

Suggestions for car buying
by FlyingHighNow inif you were a lady and you were 55 and had $5,000 or less to spend on a used car, what would buy?
top concerns: good mpg; reliable; in not having major issues like ball joints breaking, timing belts breaking, etc.
not too expensive to maintain.

I bought a 2000 Saab 9-5 a couple of years back. It was pre GM ownership, so I knew it would be sturdily built. I paid £1000 for it in 2012. It had 74,000 miles on the clock with just 2 previous owners and full service history. Since then I've covered over 30,000 miles. All I've had to pay out for is a new battery and tyres plus normal servicing. Mine's a turbo model, so I make sure of oil changes at around 6000 mile intervals

"Jehovah ALWAYS had/used an organization". How would you reply?
by EdenOne inin a recent meeting with elders, an argument was used to the effect that jehovah has always [= throughout history] used, or operated through, an organization; therefore, the wts must be that organization today, since god must be using one.
naturally, i know what arguments i've used to counter that argument.
but i'm interested in hearing yours.

Eden one - next time just ask the JW to refresh your memory as to exactly what the Bible says when it talks about an organization. Your JW will unhappily thumb through his Bible until it finally dawns on him that there is no mention at all in the Sriptures - not even the NWT - to an organisation of any sort.
